New PRD paper: “Stable photon orbits in stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes”

In our new paper, published in Physical Review D, Sam Dolan and I investigate the existence of stable photon orbits (SPOs) in four-dimensional stationary axisymmetric electrovacuum spacetimes. In particular, we explore SPOs around Majumdar–Papapetrou and Reissner–Nordström di-holes, analysing the transition from order to chaos using a selection of Poincaré sections.

Interestingly, the existence of highly chaotic SPOs around a pair of black holes can be related to the ‘speckled’, highly chaotic patterns visible in certain binary black hole shadows, which we explored in our previous paper, “Binary black hole shadows, chaotic scattering and the Cantor set”.
